Why do engines consume oil?

In modern engines manufactured with new technologies, metals (cylinders, pistons) are designed closer together to achieve high performance. This design approach leads to oil degradation and consumption.

Vehicle manufacturers specify acceptable oil loss rates for certain mileage intervals in their manuals. Synthetic oils consume less oil compared to mineral oils.
